Our Story

Responsible Travel, Operadora de Tours Cia. Ltda. is a German-Ecuadorian enterprise that offers tours, vacation packages, and cruises in South America.

It was legally constituted on February 17, 2010, having as founders Frank Herken Alte, Paulina Maritza Moreno Cáceres, and Jacqueline de Fátima Arias Ramírez. Responsible Travel was born with the deepest interest in allowing foreign tourists, mainly from Germany, to experience firsthand the magic that, as avid adventurers and travelers, the founders know that Ecuador's Mainland and the Galapagos Islands offer responsibly and sustainably.

For 12 years, Responsible Travel has specialized in fascinating cultural and adventure tours in the Andes, relaxing beach vacations on the sands of the Pacific coast, trips to the mysterious green world of the Amazon rainforest, comfortable hotel accommodations in major cities and cruises to the enchanted islands of the Galapagos. It also operates in the main destinations in South America such as Colombia, Peru, and Chile.

Since 2011, Responsible Travel has been working hand in hand with Fundación Amazonía Productiva (FAP) as the main sponsor of social and environmental projects and support for local and fair trade. Together with FAP, Responsible Travel collaborates directly in the comprehensive educational support to children and young people of the Chaka community in Sucúa and, since 2019, has ventured into the reforestation process of a sector affected by a forest fire that resulted in 6339.00 hectares burned, to obtain an environmental recovery and offset the carbon footprint left by its economic activity.

Located in the heart of Quito-Ecuador, with operators of various nationalities and several years of experience in tourism, Responsible Travel has managed to grow steadily over the years, until today, which has more than 20 workers within the organization.
Despite starting as a venture aimed primarily at the German market, the organization is now proud to have the ability to offer the wonders of Ecuador and South America to North Americans, Europeans, and Spanish speakers, who seek to travel consciously and considering the socio-cultural, environmental and economic impact that tourism has on the destinations they visit.

Although in 2020 and 2021 the organization went through hard times due to the health crisis caused by the SarsCov-2 pandemic, thanks to the efforts of a team committed to sustainable tourism and hard work, Responsible Travel was not only reactivated with the hope of continuing as they started, but with the hope of going even further.

Currently, with Flor Maria Gaona as General Manager and Frank Alte as President, Responsible Travel, in honor of its name, in addition to the joint work with Fundación Amazonia Productiva, has achieved membership in The International Ecotourism Society of the Ecuadorian-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, has been certified for several consecutive years with the "Distintivo Q" for tourism quality awarded by Quito Turismo, a governmental institute, obtaining the Platinum level of 100% compliance, has obtained the AHK-Prevention certificate in the prevention of violence against women, is part of the LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Tourism of Ecuador, members of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association - IGLTA, and in January 2024 obtained the Travelife Certified certification as a sustainable tourism operator.

Responsible Travel is exceptional as they helped us have a very memorable Ecuador trip for our family. We worked with a Responsible Travel Agent, and she was amazing. Our Agent was in constant communication with us going out of her way and helping us at every step during the whole trip. Whole trip was arranged without any flaws. Some of the things they arranged for us were: 1) Pick up and drop off from airport 2) Booking the 4 days Amazon tour with amazing sacha lodge 3) Local Quito tours with tour guide 4) PCR test at the hotel for travel back to USA. 5) Everything was customized to our needs and timings I am amazed at the service I received. Our Travel Agent at Responsible Travel in Quito Ecuador did a terrific job making arrangements for our recent trip to Quito and the Napo Wildlife Center in the Amazon. He was very friendly, efficient, and responsive and did a very good job making adjustments to our travel plans and reservations when necessary due to COVID restrictions and airline schedule changes. He even helped quickly resolve several significant problems a friend of ours encountered in dealing with a different travel agency who we were meeting later on our trip to Ecuador even though none of the problems were of his making nor were they his responsibility to resolve. We and our friends had a terrific trip to Ecuador and highly recommend Responsible Travel.

Our trip to Ecuador was amazing! Responsible Travel in Ecuador was just incredible to work with. We faced serious challenges in our trip when a general strike was called throughout Ecuador by CONAIE, an association of indigenious people. This involved roadblocks and protests throughout the country. Our travel advisor, and the guide she hired, Dario, did an absolutely incredible job of working around these conditions to ensure a wonderful experience, even though this meant rearranging our itinerary and schedule completely. When our Ecuadorian Ballet Folklorico performance was cancelled, she arranged a private performance in a beautiful hotel. When the city of Banos was blocked off, our Travel Advisor and Dario suggested Mindo insteady - a gorgeous nature destination with hummingbirds, ziplines and river rafting. It was a hit and we were safe and well cared for throughout the trip. In my last day relaxing in the thermal baths at Papallacta, I couldn't recommend RT enough to the travelers around me. Thank you!

Ecuador & the Galapagos Island Adventure

Overall, I had a wonderful time. The guides and drivers were all excellent—knowledgeable, punctual, and spoke English very well. Regarding the accommodations: * The hostel in Baños was good, though they were a bit too eager to charge extra for things like a second cup of coffee at breakfast. * The lodge in Archidona was great, with very nice staff, good food, and beautiful bungalows. Some of the pool furniture could use repair or replacement, as it's falling apart. * The Palace Hotel on Santa Cruz was very good, with a perfect location, attentive staff, and nicely appointed rooms. It would be helpful if they provided flashlights in the rooms in case of power outages after dark. * The Yellow House in Quito was barely acceptable. While the hosts were very nice and accommodating, the overall condition of the hostel was run down. It was dark, felt humid and cold, and could have been cleaner. The furniture was very old, and the doors and windows didn't close properly. With proper care, this hostel could be quite nice, as the location and breakfast were good. In its current condition it is depressing. I strongly recommend that you revise the activity descriptions on your website to clearly indicate what is included in the tour and what is meant to be explored individually by travelers. The description for Baños was particularly misleading in this respect. As we discussed, the itinerary for the arrival day in Santa Cruz also needs to be updated on the website, as the listed activities actually don’t happen. If left as is, unnecessary disappointment and frustration is guaranteed, which reflects on the whole experience. Thank you for your assistance throughout my trip.

Responsible Travel is really a 5 stars travel agent. In spite of having been contacted only seven days before our arrival in Quito from Italy, they were able to organise for us a terrific cruise in the Galapagos (Yate Bonita) and a wonderful one-day excursion to the Cotopaxi. Travel representative was amazing. She went out of her way to design our itinerary so that our days in Ecuador remain unforgettable. And she also gave us precious tips for our spare time in Quito. I cannot find the words to say how happy we have been with her assistance.
